Healthy Homes

A grant was awarded by the NHS South and East Region Research and Development Committee to enable us to assess the impact of specially constructed ' low allergen' houses versus conventionally constructed houses on asthma symptoms.

The research was carried out in co-operation with Portsmouth City Council. This randomised controlled trial is unique in the extent of environmental changes instigated and will help to answer the critical question of the usefulness of allergen avoidance in secondary prevention of asthma.

Despite considerable delays with planning and building programme and difficulties with recruitment, the study has been completed and the data is being analysed.
